Many attorneys who are new to using social media in their lawyer marketing wonder what they should post. Should posts be professional or fun? Should they offer legal advice or give a glimpse into the daily workings of the law firm? Should they avoid being personal or is it ok to show off pictures of the new grandbaby?

The answer may be all of the above. The key to successful legal marketing through social media is to find a balance between sharing your expertise and showing your personal side. Potential clients want a lawyer who is experienced and knowledgeable, but they also want someone they can connect with, especially if they are going through a difficult time. By providing a bit of personal touch, you can show that you are someone who has the expertise and that you can be trusted.

Make your posts a mixture of professional and personal, but don't confuse personal with private. Don't grumble about your workload or your aching back. No matter what your credentials, negativity and too much information are seen as unprofessional.
