Here it is: your very first interaction with a new client. You’re ready to enter the conference room and impress her with your legal expertise and caring bedside manner.

The problem is, this isn’t the first time you’ve spoken with the client. She has already seen you answer legal questions in your online videos—and depending on your performance, you may need to work harder to impress her this time around.

In many ways, your online videos are like a first date. Your viewers will decide whether or not they’d like to meet you based on what they see of you on your website—and video is the best example of how you look, sound, and act in real life.

Here are three tips that will make your client pick up the phone for your “second date”:

  • Dress up. Pictures of you in a polo shirt and jeans are fine for Facebook, but your website is first and foremost a business. You wouldn’t go on a first date in ripped shorts, and you certainly wouldn’t want to appear that way in a video that will be watched over and over again.

  • Don’t talk about yourself. Remember that girl you dated who talked for 45 minutes straight and never even asked your name? Don’t be that girl. Avoid the urge to blather on about your qualifications: talk about your customer. Each video should answer a specific question your ideal client would have.

  • Be confident. No amount of online copy can convey the confidence in a single spoken sentence. Present your information with conviction, just as you would face-to-face.
