The marketing world, especially for law firm marketing, might seem confusing to some and make perfect sense to others. Being a great lawyer doesn’t mean you can ignore the world of marketing because success doesn’t sell itself. Successful marketing can make a good law firm great and save a decent firm on the brink of going under.

The good news about becoming a great marketing entrepreneur is that you can learn through experience. You don’t have to go to the best business school or law school, and you don’t have to be born with “it.” Many great entrepreneurs became great by being bad. Experience is one of the best predecessors of success.

That’s the hard way. Better than learning from your mistakes is learning from other peoples’ mistakes. Take a look at some successful marketing strategies from people who have been through the hard times already. It’s a good idea to spend time with people who are smarter than you to learn from them and their mistakes.

Great entrepreneurs have a few traits in common, whether they learned them from school, experience, or watching others. To be successful, it’s best to have a three-pronged personality. This can come easily, or can be a challenge. But a great entrepreneur must wear three hats:

  • The technician. To run a successful law firm, you need to be a successful (or at least skilled) lawyer.
  • The manager. It is a business, after all. You need to be able to run the company like a general managing his troops, from the day-to-day, to the big picture.
  • The entrepreneur. Being good now is necessary for the present, but looking into the future is necessary to being great later.

It might be difficult to make yourself the perfect entrepreneur, but knowing how to improve is often one of the biggest steps.
