Look: life doesn’t just happen when you are ready for it. Your kid’s milestones aren’t going to wait for your income to match what you’d projected it to be by this point in your career. Your blood pressure isn’t going to drop out of the danger zone until you win the big prestigious case that finally means You’ve Made It.

If you’ve found yourself prioritizing the almighty dollar over your family, your privacy, and your health, it might be time to take a good long look at where your life is headed.

You have a law firm to make a living, not so you can have a life. If everything in your day-to-day dealings right now seems to go back to your clients, the needs of your clients, and the money you are making from your caseload, consider taking a day off. It’s time to make a “What matters to you” list.

Start by listing off what you are actually doing right now. Give yourself a sense of how much time you spend each day dealing with the items on this list. Are you happy with your work-life balance?

Now list off what actually matters to you: what you enjoy doing, what you wish you could be doing more of, what you want to be doing five or ten years from now. How much time do you spend each day doing the things you love?

What might you change to make these lists look more alike?
