Some attorneys treat updating their websites like a chore, something they have to get through before they can get back to doing other, more important things. Many even think updates are pointless, and that “nobody actually reads these things anyway.”

This type of mentality isn’t going to build the successful law firm marketing platform you’re hoping for. If you hate updating your website, your readers (and there are readers) are going to feel it. They’re going to be alienated, bored, and maybe even resentful. That’s not a great way to get more clients.

Instead of seeing your readers as potential clients, you should imagine them as a throng of raving fans. After all, you’re a celebrity in your community, and all of these people want to hear from you. They want information, they want to be entertained, and they want to know if you understand what they’re going through.

Here are a few tips to remember as you write articles and blog posts for your legal website:

  • Grow your fanbase. Interesting headlines and compelling copy are key in attracting a reader’s attention, allowing you to enter the conversation that is taking place in his mind.
  • Communicate with your fans. Encourage a debate in your comments section. Weigh in on topics publicly, welcoming new readers. Offer a newsletter to keep your loyal readers informed.
  • Continue to cultivate the herd. If you offer informative, interactive content, your fans will spread the word about you to their friends, taking your word-of-mouth referrals viral.
