Just how important is tracking current trends to the success of the average lawyer?

Well, let's take an example from another industry, newspaper publishing. About 20 years ago, a small number of Internet-savvy users began posting classified ads online, and this percentage grew exponentially over the following two decades as more and more buyers and sellers bypassed the middlemen—that is, the newspapers selling classified ads—and went directly to the web.

You can bet that the majority of newspaper executives were blissfully unaware of this trend—or, if they did grasp the correlation between falling ad revenues and rising Internet classifieds, they pooh-poohed it as a fad that would quickly burn out. Flash forward to 2013, and the newspaper industry is in dire shape, and some reliable experts predict that there will be no print newspapers at all within the next decade.

You can draw a valuable lesson from the mistakes of these newspaper executives (many of whom are now on the unemployment line, or trying to hack out a living in the unfamiliar online world).

As a practicing lawyer, you owe it to yourself to be aware of the trends that affect your business—be those the number of prospective law-school graduates in the pipeline or the tendency of big law firms to pass on more and more of their work to paralegals in order to save money. If you don't plan your future with these trends in mind, you may well find yourself out of work and at a loss for what to do next!

At Great Legal Marketing, we know how important it is for savvy lawyers to be “plugged in” to larger trends in the world around them. Being ready for the “next big thing” is essential, not just for effective and innovative legal marketing, but for the survival of your business.
