Ask any experienced attorney where he gets his business, and he will likely say word of mouth. His clients told their family, friends, and colleagues about the good experience they had with their lawyer and they in turn call on that lawyer when they have similar legal needs. This form of attorney marketing has been going on for centuries. Today, in the 21st century, the good word-of-mouth lawyer marketing principle is the same as it has been historically, but, at the same time, it is has changed significantly.

Legal Marketing Word of Mouth Has Changed – But Not as Much As You’d Think

Today’s lawyers still benefit from and should rely on good word of mouth. Personal referrals still matter. New clients often come from previous clients who have been happy with our services.

However, now our potential pool of new clients has grown exponentially. Now, word of mouth can quickly reach thousands of people and even go viral through the use of social media sites.

Think about Facebook

Current Facebook statistics indicate that the site has more than 800 million registered users and that more than 400 million users log on each day. The average Facebook user has 130 friends. ( Of course, if you are friends with someone under the age of 30 that number of friends is likely much larger.)

What this means to you as an attorney is that every time you interact with someone you know, many other people see that interaction. Some may be interested enough to find out more about you. Others will remember your name if they need an attorney because someone with whom they are friends has friended you.

And There are Other Important Social Media Sites

Facebook isn’t the only game in town. Other social media sites, particularly Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube also have large followings and can be beneficial for your small law firm marketing word-of-mouth campaign.
