Work with Clients YOU Want to Work with

There are some great things about managing your own company, running your own business, or leading your own law firm. Three of the biggest advantages are a bigger paycheck, more freedom and creativity, and being your own boss. That third one is especially important for a lot of people. Many people would rather lead than follow others.

When you work with clients that you don’t enjoy working with, however, it's like they become your boss. This is NOT the work situation you worked so hard to get yourself into. If you are in a position where you are your own boss, you are in a position where you can pick the clients you want to work with. When you and your clients have the right relationship, it’s better for everyone.

Here is what you can do in a marketing meeting:

  • Describe what you do.
  • Describe what kind of clients are looking for your services.
  • Describe what kind of clients you like working with.
  • Market to those types of clients!

Even if a terrible client walks through your doors and is looking for your services, you don’t have to take his case. That relationship will not work for either of you, and he will be able to find a firm who wants to work with him.

You have the right to work with the type of clients that you get along with. You don’t have to sit at your desk at 8:00 p.m. on a Saturday evening thinking to yourself, “Why did I take this client’s case?” That is the beauty of running your own firm and deciding what type of people to market towards. Start enjoying the perks of your position! Your office will appreciate it too.
