Attorneys: Leave Your Jealous Mistress (Part B)

After 12 years of working for someone else, I finally opened my first practice. And, I did the same thing every other lawyer does. I caved into "the marketing vultures" that make their living selling the same traditional lawyer advertising to every attorney in town. I spent thousands of dollars buying the types of ads every other lawyer was buying and then wondering why the clients weren't pouring in.

When it Comes to Lawyer Marketing, There are No Rules

I followed the rules of traditional lawyer marketing and lost. I wasn't getting new clients despite my advertising, endless hours in the office, and even a great track record of helping the clients I did have.

This is around the time that I discovered that "balance" and running a law firm were not mutually exclusive ideas.
I went to legal marketing conferences and heard from other lawyers who were actually rejecting the cases they didn't want to work on and claiming that their clients were not their "masters".

I also began to find out that having a balanced life made me a better lawyer.

I understand that this way of thinking is so out of line with most of our ingrained notions of being a lawyer, that you may be ready to stop reading right here. If that's the case, and you are not interested in learning how to be the type of lawyer that can balance a career with a social life than you don't have to read any further.

Balance isn't something you are ever going to achieve if you believe that law is the jealous mistress you'll never escape from
. You need to start by challenging yourself to change your way of thinking. Say NO to that jealous mistress and start running the kind of law practice you really want.

As part of Great Legal Marketing, we focus on saying NO to law as a jealous mistress and start seeking out new strategies to market to our ideal clients in ways they'll actually respond to. The best way to begin is by getting a copy of my Free Report and CD about how to stop marketing like every other lawyer on the block and grow the kind of practice you can be proud of while still getting home on time for dinner.
