Because of the economy, many couples who intend to divorce are putting it off until they can afford the legal fees associated with doing so. They're continuing to live "separate but apart" without going through any legal proceedings so they don't have to come up with the money to get a divorce while times are so tight.
The number of couples choosing this route is astounding and it's affecting family law practices everywhere. It's getting harder and harder to find clients, even though the number one cause of divorce is financial trouble. Ironic, huh?
And aside from the families across the country who are postponing divorce affecting your practice, when you do get clients, it's getting harder and harder to get paid. I'm sure you've experienced this ...
You get a retainer and then the case becomes much bigger than your retainer. That happens all the time in our niche. Now with the real estate market being as bad as it is (remember when we could just wait to get paid when the couple sold their house?) and pensions practically disappearing, the pool of money from which to collect our fees has drastically dwindled.
It might surprise you to know that my practice has earned RECORD HIGH INCOME in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. That means we're consistently making more money, not less, like so many other family law practices.
We've had three consistent years of MORE NEW CLIENTS than the previous year and I've even added two new lawyers (plus replaced one who retired) ... in the middle of this recession!
I don't say that to brag. Just to let you know that the cycle of extremely long hours, working weekends, and skating by to pay your expenses does not have to continue. In fact, I have achieved the independence I'd always hoped for and am more profitable than ever, withOUT the use of trickery, or slimy unethical tactics.

As I've already shared with you, I've been quite blessed in my business. I've built a practice that I'm very proud of over the past twenty years and I'm happy to report that my practice is not just surviving, and not just thriving, but GROWING rapidly.
Recently I actually lost a partner in my practice who was grossing $300,000. He retired after winning a huge settlement against the government. Good for him, but you'd expect my practice's income to suffer because of that ... yet we didn't feel it one bit!
